You too, move like Shakira: Brookhaven offers belly dancing lessons at Blue Point


Considering the health benefits and the price, signing up for this course seems like a no-brainer.

An eight-week belly dancing class is scheduled for March and April at the Henrietta Acampora Recreation Center in Blue Point. The Town of Brookhaven is offering the course for only $ 45.

The benefits of belly dancing – losing weight, strengthening the core, improving posture, and gaining grace among them – are well documented (see below for a full list of benefits).

It’s also quite entertaining and can be very artistic. Consider Shakira’s Super Bowl LIV halftime performance earlier this month and her dancing in “Hips Don’t Lie.”

The shimmy and shaking at Blue Point begins Monday, March 9, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with the first session of the class. The course continues the next seven Mondays and ends on April 27. The registration deadline is Friday March 6.

The emphasis will be on basic oriental dance techniques and steps. Participants, who must be at least 18 years old, are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and non-slip socks. Sorry, no sneakers.
