An Egyptian woman has been fired from her job as a teacher after a video showing her belly dancing went viral on the internet.
The woman, identified as Aya Yousef, worked at Khaled Ibn al-Walid Primary School and was fired after the dance video shot on a Nile cruise started circulating the internet. And that’s not all !
Yousef’s husband even got divorced after the video became a national debacle.
The video, which has gone viral, shows Yousef dancing with his colleagues while wearing a headscarf and long-sleeved clothes.
However, the few moments of dancing brought him a huge amount of backlash.
According to a BBC report, Yousef was fired from primary school in Dakahlia Governorate in the Nile Delta.
She taught Arabic there.
As a section of the internet was busy criticizing Yousef for his choices, women’s rights advocates in Egypt raised their voices against the issue.
The director of the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights, Dr. Nihad Abu Qumsan, offered Yousef a position in her office.
She even advised Yousef to bring the necessary documents in order to lodge a complaint against his dismissal, the BBC report details.
