KUCHING: The Kuching Bellydance Arts Association (Odaak) will host its first Malaysia International Bellydance Arts Competition 2014 and Oriental Gala Show on December 13.

Its president, Jasmine Tan, said the international competition drew 83 participants who would compete in various categories.

“We invite members of the public and oriental dance enthusiasts to attend the competition and gala at the MBKS auditorium,” Tan said at a press conference held at a restaurant here yesterday.

Tan revealed that the response to the competition was very good and that the participants came from Malaysia and Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan.

Odaak was established three years ago to promote dance among the performing arts in Malaysia.

“It is also about building and maintaining good relationships and affiliating with dance bodies and organizations inside and outside Malaysia,” she said.

The competition was open to all citizens in the Amateur Solo categories (18 years and over) for non-instructors; Professional (18 years and over) for instructors and co-instructors; Amateur group (18 years and over) for non-instructors of two to eight people; Fusion (18 years and over) for all professional groups, instructors and co-instructors from two to eight people; Kid Solo (seven to 12 years old); Teenage Solo (13 to 17 years old); Junior group (5 to 13 years old) from 2 to 8 people.

Scores to be awarded for skills (30%), expression (30%) and 40% for stage performance, costume and overall performance.
