Durham Lion Dance Chinese New Year 2022 Plans, Activity Schedule & Timings

Preparations are underway for a dynamic day of fun to celebrate Chinese New Year in Durham.

The city is ready to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Tiger in style and is gearing up for a day-long party that will bring the streets to life with color, music and dance on February 5.

At the heart of Lunar New Year celebrations will be the iconic lion dance performance, a traditional part of Chinese New Year festivities believed to bring good luck.

Previous Chinese New Year celebrations in Durham city center

Durham Town Hall will host stalls and activities – also featuring Chinese musical instruments and costumes – from 10.30am.

The lion dance procession, accompanied by the beating of the drums, will begin at Millennium Place at 12:30 p.m. Local school children are heavily involved in the day and pupils from Langley Moor School Junior will take part in their own lion dance procession at the same time.

There will also be a lion dance performance in the Market Square.

Beginning at 11 a.m., the nearby Clayport Library will host Chinese storytelling sessions and a language initiation drop-off.

Day participants will also include the Oriental Museum of Durham and students from New College Durham who will take part in food tastings, while other attractions on offer at City Hall will include a Chinese Tea Art Show tea tasting in his Burlison Galerie from 1:30 p.m. to 2:10 p.m.

This can be booked on the morning of the event although numbers are limited.
