About Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company:

“Chen’s phrases, part exoskeletal stiffness, part boned grace, embodied epic dignity.” – The voice of the village

The choreographer/dancer, Nai-Ni Chen, was a unique artist whose work crosses cultural boundaries. Each of her dances reflects her personal vision as an American immigrant and female artist deeply rooted in Asian culture. From this very personal perspective, she creates new works that reflect current issues with global influences. Some of his works have been developed in collaboration with renowned artists such as the Ahn Trio, Glen Velez, Joan La Barbara and members of the New Asia Chamber Music Society.

Bridging the grace of Asian elegance and American vibrancy, Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company is a leading provider of innovative cultural experiences that reflect the inspiring hope and energy of the immigrant journey. The company’s groundbreaking works have focused on themes ranging from ancient legends that reflect the issues of the present day to purely abstract contemporary dances influenced by a mix of cultures that Nai-Ni Chen experienced in New York. An Asian American company that celebrates cross-cultural experience, the company’s productions naturally raise questions of identity, authenticity and equality.

The company has presented in some of the most prestigious concert halls such as the Joyce Theatre, Lincoln Center in New York and the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in Florida. The company performs annually at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Queens College, College of Staten Island and Ellis Island. Internationally, the company has performed at international festivals including Open Look Festival in Russia, Silesia International Contemporary Dance Festival, Konfrontations International Festival in Poland, Chang Mu International Dance Festival in Korea , the Meet in Beijing International Arts Festival in China and the Tamaulipas International Arts Festival in Mexico.

Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company has received over 20 awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and numerous Citations of Excellence and grants from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. To advance dance education, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company is currently in residence at the University of New Jersey City, pioneering a program with the university’s A Harry Moore Laboratory School, teaching dance to disabled children in cities. GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – At five o’clock in the afternoon of a peaceful spring day, the secretary of the Sun women’s salon and spa in Gaza received a phone call from a man reserving a place for his wife in a belly dancing class.

The secretary received many calls from men interested in registering their wives. Men are not allowed to enter this women-only spa and the only contact they can make is by phone.

Soleil is the first spa for women in Gaza that offers a variety of health, relaxation and beauty treatments for women. The all-female staff of 10 offers beauty treatments and classes. The spa also has a gym and social club.

On the floor dedicated to the Soleil Training Academy, women learn belly dancing from a professional belly dancing teacher. Some clients, especially those who are getting married or exploring belly dancing as a way to get in shape and lose weight, prefer to take private lessons.

One of them, Hanadi (a pseudonym), 22, told Al-Monitor that her mother pushed her to enroll in the course as her wedding date approached. “My mum told me that I should learn belly dancing before my wedding day to avoid being embarrassed. I chose to take private sessions as I am shy and don’t want others women see how bad my dancing is. I don’t want to be bullied.

Al-Monitor spoke to Soleil director Rawan al-Katari, who founded the spa in 2018. She said belly dancing classes were her most popular service, especially over the past two years, when participation jumped 50%.

“Gaza women see dancing as a way of psychological relief in addition to exercise to lose weight, she said. “Women’s perception of the importance of fulfilling their husband’s desires has changed. Marital incompatibility drives up divorce rates in Gaza. In 2021, divorce cases increased by 23.6% compared to 2020.”

Katari said the internet has brought a degree of openness to Gazan society. “Many young people travel to Turkey and other foreign countries. Their exposure to other cultures triggered a cultural shift in society. Open-minded young married couples struggle in Gaza’s conservative society.

She explained that she first considered opening the spa in 2014 after Israel’s Operation Protective Edge, when she began looking for a way to provide women in the Gaza Strip with comfort and psychological, health and aesthetic support.

Katari admits the staff have come under fire from the public and the spa has come under fire for running what critics call a dance academy, the kind of institution few residents would approve of. The attitude is clear in the comments on the spa’s social media posts regarding the belly dancing class.

“We do not offer anything contrary to social values in Gaza. We only provide entertainment for women without violating the customs and traditions of society. The place is an all-female establishment. We will never allow ourselves to commit any lewd acts,” she said. added.

Meanwhile Ahlam, 30, a pseudonym, slammed the courses in a street interview with Al-Monitor. She associates this type of dance with revealing outfits and loud music, which are considered against Islamic law. She also doesn’t think dance lessons are appropriate amid the current poverty and suffering in the gated enclave.

“I was provoked by the social media post of the dance lessons, which showed the dance teacher looking indecent,” she said.

Bridgerton fans can find out how to dance, chat and flirt the Regency way at the Royal Pavilion next month.

Fascination with Regency etiquette, fashions and history is high with the launch of the second series of the Netflix series Bridgerton. The first series drew over 82 million viewers, making it the most-watched series in the channel’s history.

Led by costumed actors, participants will discover how to behave in polite society as they plan an imaginary Grand Ball hosted by George IV in 1831.

The skills to be taught will involve how to properly flutter your fan, a vital skill in Regency times when every lady wore a fan on her evenings.

How to gossip and carry on a conversation will also feature as polite society should understand social hierarchy and follow rules such as not laughing too loudly or discussing finances or “vulgar” topics.

Participants in the workshop on Saturday May 7 will also learn the basics of Regency dancing, essential for all partygoers, regardless of age.

Guests are welcome to dress up if they wish and bring a pair of gloves and a fan if you have one. Events hosted by Regency Delights are designed as part of our Regency Wardrobe Season.

RPMT CEO Hedley Swain said: “This event will be hugely fun for fans of the Regency period which was so graceful and elegant.

“The Royal Pavilion would have been the venue for many grand balls and events when George IV lived here and it is wonderful to recreate part of history for modern audiences.

The Regency Wardrobe is a collection of imaginary clothing whose design reflects the fashion, style and history of the Regency era. With a decoration directly inspired by the aspects of its interiors, ball gowns, promenade dresses, parasols and bags, enliven the beautiful rooms of the Royal Pavilion.

Each unique piece is created by artist Stephanie Smart, using only paper and thread.
